For those of us who were raised by narcissists, there are some very common challenges that may rear their ugly heads when we are adults. Here are just a few: 1. Depression and anxiety; 2. Low self-esteem; 3. Trust and abandonment issues; 4. Feeling unworthy of love and respect; 5. Downplaying accomplishments; 6. Finding yourself in recurring dysfunctional, destructive relationships; 7. Low or no self-care.

These are just some of the possible outcomes resulting from a childhood with narcissistic parents or role models. Obviously, because we are all individuals, the specific results will be unique. For the majority of us, it takes many years to recognize and then accept the damage that has been done on so many levels. In all honesty, some people never recognize it for what it is and, subsequently, go through their entire lives suffering. It doesn’t have to be this way, and this is one of the many reasons that I have dedicated myself to helping others in the realm of narcissistic abuse awareness and recovery.
My primary recommendation, whether a person has just an inkling of a feeling that something was/is ‘off’ in their family of origin or relationship(s), or if they have a massive “a-ha” moment of realization and see the damage within themselves, is to seek out support. Forums, support groups, therapists/psychologists/counsellors who are knowledgeable in narcissistic abuse and treatment, narcissistic abuse recovery coaches such as myself, friends who understand … whatever supportive resources you can locate for yourself, just do it. Having support is absolutely key in journeying through narcissistic abuse awareness, acceptance and recovery, particularly in the early stages.
In addition to support, it is imperative, beyond educating yourself about narcissism (fragile egos and disordered individuals) so that you understand what happened and why, to shine the spotlight on your recovery. Be patient with yourself, take the time you need to make your way through the process, look after yourself on all levels – mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. You need to make yourself strong for this journey. I can’t emphasize enough just how important this is. Invest in your recovery because it will serve you well in the future. In fact, it will more than likely change your life for the better in ways you never imagined!

One form of personal growth involves engaging in continuing education. Lifelong learning keeps your mind open, provides you with newfound knowledge or additions to current knowledge, and offers the opportunity to put what you have learned to use in your own life and beyond.

Just today, I’m proud to say that I completed an online course to build on my knowledge of CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Technique (a big help in the battle against self-sabotage and negative thinking, and also offers guidance with mastering emotions and positively reprogramming the mind!). It’s very rewarding to receive a new certificate, especially when it enriches my ability to help others. Next up and waiting for me is a more detailed Health and Nutrition course to add to my current education on the subject.
Continuing education can increase confidence, job opportunities, networking and a host of other pluses. It can also help us to grow and expand ourselves.
The courses or programs we choose to engage in run the gamut of topics, especially in this day and age of online learning. Aiming for a subject that interests us and that we’re passionate about can make the entire process more attractive and enjoyable, too.
So, if you’re considering ways to continue your education, retrain, or simply take an interest course or courses, I recommend going for it. Personal growth is always positive and beneficial.

Music has always been a big part of my life. Listening to it, performing it on the piano, composing it.

From a very young age, the piano became one of my best friends. Happy times, sad times and everything in between, it was always there for me. Playing the piano is definitely cathartic for me. I inevitably feel more positive both during and after engaging with those 88 keys, whether I play for 5 minutes or 60.
Beyond being a musician myself, I have also always loved listening to music. It has the ability to affect me on so many levels. I can just as easily appreciate a Chopin piano concerto as I can a song in the Top 40 charts (or pretty much anything in between).
Having something to engage in that you enjoy and are maybe even passionate about can have amazingly beneficial effects on your life. If you already know what that is, try to hang onto it. Even make some additions of new ones if you want. We can never have too many things in our lives that bring us happiness. If you haven’t yet discovered something that fulfills you and creates a fairly consistent positive space in your life, maybe it’s time to start looking.
When we need a quick pick-me-up, DIY therapy in any form can be helpful. It could be a hobby of some kind. Maybe it’s taking up a new recreational activity, sitting down to read a book or registering for an online course. Even if it’s simply self-care in the form of a bubble bath or a walk, or just taking a few minutes to do a crossword puzzle – whatever it may be, if it brings you some positivity, makes you feel better and/or creates some much-needed relaxation (whatever it is that you need in the moment), do that.
It helps to have something that brings us joy on some level and gives us a safe place to turn when we need it. This is also a great way to stay in touch with ourselves (especially if we happen to be in any type of relationship with a narcissistically-inclined individual). What that activity is, is a matter of personal choice. The end goal is the same for all of us – make sure to take the time to do something that makes us feel good. So, what’s your DIY therapy? 🙂

No matter what life may throw at us, one of our best lines of defence is making healthy lifestyle choices. Those include consuming nutritional food and beverages, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, stress management and self-care. Vitamin/mineral supplements can also be beneficial in many cases but it is advisable to discuss anything of this nature with a physician in order to ensure that it is a safe choice in your unique case.

When it comes to making healthy lifestyle choices, they don’t need to be extreme in order to make a difference. Doing things in moderation is typically the way to go. It’s also quite possible to implement choices that are likeable and enjoyable. When we enjoy what we eat and the things that we do for our wellbeing, it makes the whole process of having and maintaining a healthy lifestyle much less complicated.
I’ll be the first person to say that it can be incredibly challenging to keep healthy lifestyle choices at the top of the priority list in cases of, say, dealing regularly with a narcissistically-inclined individual. When feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and lost, self-care may feel like it takes too much effort or that it’s a lost cause. However, now is EXACTLY the time that healthy lifestyle choices, especially self-care, can help us the most.
The bottom line is that choosing good options for ourselves when it comes to food, beverages, exercise, sleep, stress management and consistent self-care is one of the most positive and beneficial actions we can take, regardless of what is going on around us. These choices, no matter how small or simple we need for them to be at times, are the ones that will fuel our brains, mental wellbeing and bodies every day, which will, in turn, help to maintain the favorable momentum along with promoting and supporting long-term health and wellness.

Some of the more popular self-talk phrases have become somewhat cliched; nonetheless, they are still beneficial when it comes to talking to ourselves with positivity and encouragement. Belief in oneself is necessary for success. Unless or until we truly have faith in our abilities and positive traits, we can’t fully reach our goals and celebrate our accomplishments.

Many of us struggle with negative self-talk, a pattern we more than likely developed from a dysfunctional upbringing and/or experiences with narcissistic friends, teachers, colleagues or partners. When negativity and criticism are regularly tossed our way, it can become a challenge not to internalize it and have it become a part of how we see ourselves. But it doesn’t need to be this way.
Just as we fell into the pattern of choosing negative self-talk, we can do the same in the opposite direction. Even if you’ve had the great misfortune of never receiving a compliment from people you care about (generally happens with narcissists who always need to feel that they are the ‘best’ at the expense of everyone around them), you have the power to look at yourself from an encouraging, positive and kind standpoint. From that standpoint, try giving yourself credit for your unique talents, skills, accomplishments, personality traits and so on. Really own it. Flip the negativity on its head and focus on the positive. It’s free, simple and can change your entire outlook on yourself and the world around you. Perspective is a tool that is always at your disposal and you have the power to alter it at any given moment. Looking up at the possibilities rather than down on yourself is empowering and can have dramatic effects.
Making positive self-talk a daily habit is undoubtedly beneficial on a variety of levels. And sharing that positivity with others through compliments, encouragement and kindness will also bring with it even more positive feelings. So, cliched and simplistic as it may sound, believe in yourself, be kind to yourself and others, take care of yourself. Live your best life.

We all have at least one unhealthy habit or simply a behaviour we don’t particularly like. Might as well call it like it is…lol. But if/when we arrive at a point where we’ve had enough of it, what’s next? How do we rid ourselves of a habit or behaviour that we don’t want in our lives?
First of all, once we’re at the point of wanting to change or discontinue a habit, we’ve already recognized it as a habit/unwanted behaviour and that it’s something we want to adjust or eliminate. That right there is the basis of awareness and motivation, ready and waiting to take the next step. To add to that newfound motivation, consider making a list of all the positive reasons for wanting to make a change. Maybe the habit is expensive and you will now have more of the green stuff in your bank account. Perhaps the habit in question involves overindulging in something that could have negative consequences for your health and wellbeing or the health of the people around you. Maybe it’s something that is keeping you from socializing with friends and family.
Whatever your vice may be, if you’re aware of it, then you can change it if you want to. Can you do it alone? That depends on what the habit is. At times, a solo venture will be successful. Sometimes it’s best to enlist the help of a family member or good friend to assist in keeping you on track. Other times, a professional may be the best partner in making the transition away from one habit and moving towards something healthier.
We all have the power within us to change what doesn’t serve us well in our lives. Unhealthy habits are not life sentences unless we allow them to be. Picture what you want your life to look like and aim for that goal. Whether it’s baby steps or giant leaps or a combination of both on the journey, we need to believe in ourselves and our ability to choose our paths and reach our destinations.
